Wellcana is partnered with the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center (LSU AgCenter), under the supervision of the Board of Supervisors of Louisiana State University and Agricultural & Mechanical College. This partnership includes the cultivation, extraction, processing, production, and research of therapeutic cannabis in Louisiana. As an internationally renowned public institution of higher education and research, the LSU AgCenter’s partnership with Wellcana represents a first in the therapeutic cannabis industry.
After undergoing an extensive suitability and background investigation by the Louisiana State Police, Wellcana was the first therapeutic cannabis company to commence full-scale operations in March 2019. In August 2019, Wellcana and LSU AgCenter made history when they released medical cannabis products for sale to qualified patients in licensed pharmacies. This was the first time patients had access to legal, tested, safe, standardized, pharmaceutical-grade medical cannabis products in Louisiana.
“That was a watershed moment for our company and the State of Louisiana, reflecting many years of research and development into the cannabis plant’s biopharmaceutical applications. For the first time, medical cannabis patients in Louisiana had access to safe, tested products with formulations designed to focus on health and wellbeing.” – John B. Davis, President of Wellcana.
“The LSU AgCenter is excited about the opportunity therapeutic cannabis will provide patients in Louisiana, and we are looking forward to research initiatives that will help us to understand the full potential of this medicinal plant.” – LSU Vice President for Agriculture Dr. Bill Richardson.
